Quick Glance - Coding Changes for 2008

If you haven't already updated your office by examining the additions, deletions, and changes in the 2008 CPT codes, don't wait much longer. The changes took place January 1 and, according to an article in Medical Economics Magazine, include 242 new codes and 54 deleted codes. While those numbers aren't shocking, one statistic is: the number of revised codes, 305. One main reason for such a high count is that 152 codes were removed from the modifier -51 exemption list. The codes have not changed, they are simply no longer listed with the exemption icon in the 2008 handbook. Also, many of those codes that were removed are now considered add-on codes (appearing with a "+") and cannot be reported as stand-alones. This could affect your expected reimbursement if you use some of these codes, so be aware of the changes.

2008 CPT and HCPCS coding supplies can be found on the AMA's Online Catalog. As always, you can contact the Dallas County Medical Society for additional help as well.
